Literacy Volunteer Offers Computer Literacy at Roanoke Workshop
ROANOKE - Literacy Volunteers of Roanoke Valley received a grant from the US Department of Labor/ETA to partner with other agencies at the Virginia Workforce Center in Roanoke. Since July nearly 40 new computer literacy learned have come to the program as a result of the partnership.
The grant also allowed Literacy Volunteers to upgrade out computer lab with Teknimedia's PCIC3 software. This interactive, instructional software teaches computer fundamentals, word processing, spreadsheets, internet and email. Unlike other training available locally, the self-guided series of courses meets the needs of adult learners and job seekers who need scheduling flexibility and at the ability to learn at their own pace.

Biotech Training Program Announced
ROANOKE - Workforce Development Board member Ted Melnick, president of Novozymes Biologicals in Salem was among program officials announcing the new Industrial Biotechnology Certificate being developed through Virginia Western Community College. The program will provide training and education in biomanufacturing-related processes and practices. The training prepare participants as entry-level technicians, manufacturing operators and other positions in a variety of areas, including pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, and laboratories. Completion of the program allows graduates to compete for jobs in laboratories involved with manufacturing, quality control, and production.
The program has been developed in partnership with Novozymes Biologicals, Carilion Biomedical Institute Roanoke Regional Economic Development Partnership, Blue Ridge Technical Academy, New Century Technology Council, Western Virginia Workforce Development Board. Kim Williams, acting assistant principal of Blue Ridge Technical Academy, Robert Sandel, president of Western Virginia Community College and RHEC director Tom McKeen joined Melnick in making the announcement on October 28.
